White Kitchen vs Dark Kitchen: Which Should You Choose?

White or dark? It is one of the most fun — and most agonised-over — decisions in a kitchen renovation. Both look stunning when done well. Here is how to decide.

The case for a white kitchen

White feels clean, bright and timeless. It makes small and low-light kitchens feel bigger, works with almost any finish, and dates very slowly. The trade-off: it can show marks near the hob and sink, so a wipeable finish helps.

The case for a dark kitchen

Dark cupboards — charcoal, forest green, deep blue — feel rich, modern and dramatic. They hide everyday marks well and look striking against brass or black hardware and stone tops. In a smaller or darker room, balance them with light countertops and good lighting.

Or do both — two-tone

Many of our favourite kitchens split the difference: darker base cupboards with lighter uppers, or a dark island against pale cabinetry. You get drama and brightness in one.

Think about light and size

A bright, north-facing kitchen can carry dark cupboards easily. A small or dim kitchen usually feels better lighter, or two-tone with light on top.
